About this webinar:

In this webinar, get to know more about the latest R&D activities into compact thermal energy storage materials. The webinar will address the development of testing methods to characterize the materials and the exploration of reliable techniques to measure the state-of-charge in compact thermal energy storage. Moreover, it will provide insights into the comprehensive evaluation of stability of the materials, when used for years in practical applications. 

Presentations will provide insight into the importance of round-robin tests to establish measurement protocols among the available experimental techniques. For the correct design and optimization of thermal energy storage systems using Phase Change Materials (PCMs), it is essential to determine PCMs' thermophysical in their working temperature range. Accurate thermal conductivity/thermal diffusivity data is needed to predict heat transfer.

The webinar will elaborate upon the integration into (digitalized) energy systems, where compact “Thermal Batteries” with reliable State of Charge (SoC) determination are aimed. For this purpose, promising methods for storage utilizing either Phase Change- or Thermochemical Materials are collected and classified – with studies ranging from material tests to large storage prototypes. Furthermore, Stability mapping of PCM and TCM, aims to review CTES material degradation mechanisms and develop recommendations for stability testing.

 

Q/A Session: This 90-minute webinar will include a 30-minute Q/A session and a recording of the webinar will be available online afterwards.

The webinar is organised by the Solar Academy of the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme and hosted by ISES, the International Solar Energy Society.

Speakers

Wim van Helden

Wim van Helden studied Technical Physics and since 2014 he is working with AEE INTEC in Gleisdorf, Austria, where he is a Senior Expert in Thermal Energy Storage. Next to that, he is working as an independent consultant in the area of thermal energy storage and solar thermal technologies. He has experience in leading national and international research and demonstration projects, developing large-scale Thermal Energy Storage and compact Thermal Energy Storage.  

 

Wim is a Board Member of the European Technology and Innovation Platform on Renewable Heating and Cooling (RHC-ETIP) and a member of the scientific committee of IRES, the International Renewable Energy Storage conference. He is leading Task 39 on Large Thermal Energy Storage for District Heating from the International Energy Agency IEA, Energy Storage programme and Task 67 on Compact Thermal Energy Storage Materials of the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling programme.

Bärbel Epp - Moderator

Bärbel Epp is the founder and managing director of the German consultancy solrico. She is responsible for the international newsletter of the web portal www.solarthermalworld.org, reporting exclusively about market and technology trends in the solar heating and cooling sector globally. solrico also created the first online world map of SHIP suppliers (SHIP = Solar Heat for Industrial Processes) and carries out surveys among the around 70 companies listed on the world map annually. Bärbel Epp graduated in Physics from the University of Oldenburg, Germany.

Helena Navarro

Helena Navarro is a Senior Researcher in Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham (UoB). She received her PhD degree in 2013 at Universitat de Barcelona in Materials Science and Technology. Her research focuses on the development of thermal energy storage solutions from a laboratory scale towards commercialization both in academic and industrial environments, decarbonising heating, cooling, transport, and industry which includes thermal and thermochemical energy storage materials, recovery of waste heat and waste cold, scalable and intelligent manufacturing technologies for thermal and thermochemical energy storage and heat transfer intensification. She currently leads the IEA SHC Task 67´s Subtask A1.1 on thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of liquids, solids, and packed beds (standardised measurements procedures and Round-Robin tests).

Gerald Englmair

Gerald Englmair is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark (DTU). He received his Ph.D. degree in 2019.

His research focuses on compact thermal energy storage for flexible (solar) heating and cooling systems - including experimental development and demonstration. His work contributes to Danish and international projects. He leads the IEA SHC Task 67´s Subtask on State of Charge Determination and is Deputy Chair of the thermal storage working group at the Danish Center for Energy Storage.

Gerald teaches in Denmark and Greenland. He has 10 years of research experience - working in Denmark, China, and Austria after graduating as Energy Engineer from FH Upper Austria.

Ángel Serrano Casero

Ángel received his Ph.D. in Chemical and Environmental Engineering from the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) in 2018. Currently, he works as anAassociate Researcher at CIC energiGUNE, specializing in thermal energy storage (TES) since joining the phase change materials and critical behaviour Group in 2018. Since 2023, he also works as research line manager of the TES technologies research line. Ángel holds expertise in developing phase change materials for energy storage across a wide temperature range (40°C-600°C) and he is actively involved in industrial, national, and European projects.
