Presidents column

Dear ISES Members, Partners and friends,

This month the International Solar Energy Society (ISES) is expanding the reach of its monthly newsletter to all of the people who have been in touch with our Society via e-mail over the past several years for one reason or another, like those who have attended past Congresses, signed up for our webinars, or just expressed an interest in our Society’s activities through our website.

ISES’ founding dates back to 1954 as the Association of Applied Solar Energy, later renamed to the Solar Energy Society and then, in 1970, the International Solar Energy Society. Through its Solar Energy Journal, its Congresses, and its participation in other conferences, the Society and its numerous national Sections have long advocated for R&D by governments and private enterprise to support the development of promising new solar energy technologies for key end-use applications such as power generation, space and water heating, and sustainable building design.

Hukseflux developes new pyrheliometer for use in demanding renewable energy applications

Following the release of the SR30 IEC 61724-1 Class A pyranometer, ISES Corporate Member, Hukseflux Thermal Sensors, introduces a new all-digital sensor in its next level product range: DR30 pyrheliometer. DR30 is a high-accuracy direct (normal incidence) solar radiation sensor, made for tracker-mounted operation. It is used in demanding solar monitoring systems and networks, and for PV site prospecting. DR30’s high data availability is attained by superior heating of the front window, efficiently suppressing dew and frost deposition. DR30 also offers on-board tilt and humidity sensors, a unique feature allowing remote diagnostics and real-time status monitoring.

Mapping solar and wind potential: job done

With the launch of the Global Solar Atlas and relaunch of the Global Wind Atlas over the last year, getting a quick estimate of solar or wind resource potential has never been so easy. These two web-based tools provide users with the latest data, freely available, with minimal expertise required. Governments and development agencies will often spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to produce a solar or wind map of a country – and yet this is no longer needed thanks to this investment by the World Bank, ESMAP and ISES Institution Member DTU Wind*. So it is job done for mapping, but there is still plenty to do…Read the full article here: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/mapping-solar-wind-potential-job-done-oliver-knight/ written by ISES Member Oliver Knight

NSW government's power plan reveals huge renewable energy resources

The Berejiklian government has identified three priority renewable energy zones in NSW that potentially have seven times the capacity of the state's coal-fired power plants. In a submission to the Australian Energy Markets Operation, the government said the zones, in New England, the central-west and the south-west of NSW "could unlock 77,000 megawatts of new generation capacity". Somalia lays ground for solar
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) office in Somalia has issued a Request for Proposals for the financing of a skills development program in the solar energy sector in Mogadishu, Kismayo and Baidoa.

The Request for Proposals outlines how one of the biggest challenges facing the development of the solar energy sector in Somalia is the shortage of qualified personnel and technical skills, which is emphasized by the absence of skills and qualification measurement infrastructure, which in turn leads to the current low quality of labor. Largest solar power plant in the country kickstarts Peru's renewable energy plans

On Tuesday, the Peruvian government announced the opening of Rubí, the largest solar power plant in the country that boasts over half a million solar panels in the southern city of Moquegua.

The inauguration of Peru’s largest solar power plant is testament to our commitment to boost the development of renewables in the country, contributing to the diversification of its generation mix and increasing energy production from clean sources in Peru’s Southern region by 12 percent,” said Antonio Cammisecra, the head of Green Power Peru. www.perureports.com/2018/03/21/peru-solar-power-plant/

Solar Cat

The following chart is the third major update in 38 years of the landmark comparison of globally integrated Cat and Human Solar Knowledge which first appeared in the 1980 edition of The Solar Cat Book. While the 2004 update verified undeniably positive human progress, this latest update provides a third authentic data point, enabling more sophisticated mathematical modeling. With exponential curve fitting now possible, increasingly dumbfounding proclamations of human solar progress can be justified.  To wit, based on these data, achievement of Cat/Human solar knowledge parity can be expected to occur in a mere 146 years!  While this might seem like a long time to some impatient humans, it is much quicker than the time it took for fossil fuels to get us where we are today - from the start of the industrial revolution. Don’t worry.  Everything will turn out fine.  Just keep at it!
